Designed and built for the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s Education Department. The brief was to design a desk for exhibition display that had both an open bin for easy storage of colored pencils as well as a closed storage area to safe keep extra storage materials. Instead of utilizing a standard lock, I designed a desk with a simple built-in unlocking mechanism. Simply insert a dowel rod into a hidden hole underneath to access the inner storage compartment.

All American Blades are table tennis paddles constructed from only native North American wood species. A majority of high-end blades are constructed of Hinoki Cypress, which is native only to Japan. Based on this I chose three wood species similar to Hinoki and crafted a limited edition set of paddles from there veneers. Additionally I designed the paddle to be both pleasing to eye and the hand, each handle is hand lathed and fitted to the paddle creating an ergonomic feel.

Skeletal is a bedside table, based on an early Shaker Side table design. In this modern update I decided to further reduce the simplicity of the shaker design, transforming it from the original double drawer design into a single drawer that seems to float within the carcase, and adding a simple lower rung shelf for the storage and easy accessibility of a bed side book.

Thin Edge is a dining/office table, the first in an ongoing exploration of creating furniture that is visually light in appearance, yet rigid. By creating a table top that is partially inset into the frame and crafting a tapered leg with a large radius on the corner Thin edge appears slender and light. The structural addition of a massive crossing lapped beam supports the mass of this table and allows it to be customized to larger lengths.

Designed for the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The brief was to design a movable wall, that could be set up quickly, fit on the freight elevator, and match the aesthetic of the museum galleries. By creating a decorative reveal running along the edge of the side panels, I was able to create a simple removable panel held in magnetically. The lightweight side panels are easy to remove, and allow spacious access to adjust the rubber stabilizing
feet when setting up for an exhibition.

Soft Edge is a coffee table, the next design in an ongoing exploration of creating furniture that is visually light in appearance. The construction of the tables legs and cross lap is almost identical to that of Thin Edge. By removing the surrounding apron and canting the legs inward, the focus is reduced solely to the cross lap. Freeing the table top from it’s base, I accentuated the heavy top by adding a bullsnose round over, creating a soft cloud like appearance to the table.
